"Smile, people, is very important."

"At the age of 27 he became the most popular person in Bulgaria. Now he is 75 but he continues to be that same person! As we walked through his memories, I wondered how such popularity was retained. What has happened over the years with this beloved artist, a liked man, a consistent politician and a generous professor? Standing face to face with your memories is a privilege of the brave. To arrange the puzzle of meetings, feelings, worries, success, disappointments ... and loneliness is an effort. It’s an effort of the heart and the soul. I envy Stefan Danailov for the ease with which he passes through the vulnerability of time. This book is a confession of love for the audience. It is the novel of his life!"



This is how the journalist and producer Georgi Toshev presents his work as a co-author of the long-awaited biography of the great Bulgarian actor Stefan Danailov. The book came out on the Bulgarian book market on the eve of its 75th anniversary.

We doubt that there is a Bulgarian who does not know Stefan Danailov - the beautiful charismatic Bulgarian actor. On December 9, 2017, over 800 people applauded the birthday artist in the big hall of the National Theater "Ivan Vazov". Among the guests in the audience were Presidents Rumen Radev, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Yordanka Fandakova - Mayor of Sofia, Tsvetka Karayancheva - President of Parliament, countless representatives of state power, colleagues, admirers. A pleiad of actors was the first to congratulate the Mr.Danailov. His students exploded in joyous choir singing of "Happy Birthday, Master!", which made the actor stand up as a sign of appreciation. For the first time at his jubilee, Stefan Danailov preferred to not be on the stage but to sit in the audience, which, as he explains, always supported and loved him. Decorating the event were the alternating video sequences with scenes from films such as "Ah, these women", "Traces remain", "Ivan Kondarev" and others that reminded of the amazing career of the actor, and various excerpts from the book "The novel of my life", which were read by Marian Marinov, Bashar Rahal, Ivan Bernev and Vladislav Karamfilov-Vurgala and others. At the end, a special greeting was the song by Tom Jones Sex Bomb performed by Darin Angelov and Deyan Angelov - a kind of hymn to all Danailov's graduates, who, during the years of training, were motivated by his teacher to be successful and self-confident on the stage.



Minister Banov awarded Professor Stefan Danailov with the ‘’Order of the Golden Age’’ of the Ministry of Culture for a full contribution in the field of cinema, theater and culture.



The last word in the emotional show, of course, was of the the man of the night Stefan Danailov:

"I've always treated with love the people who have applauded me on stagе, who have applauded me at a rally. I have done it from my heart and not because someone has made me do it. Thank you! "(...)" Most of all, thanks to all of you who contributed to my life so he can be what Is it today when I am 75 years old, although I say I am 750. Hey people, I have lived a lot! I've seen a lot! I've eaten a lot, I've drunk a lot."

"And as New Year arrives, I want to wish you to be well, healthy and smiling! Smile, people, is very important."

It is almost sure that the most popular and beloved actor Stefan Danailov wasn’t able to open all of his presents, but he certainly made the most appropriate reverance to his audience by offering the people in the theatre the beautiful edition of ‘’The novel of my life’’, co-authored with Georgi Toshev.

"Усмихвайте се, хора, много е важно."

“На 27 години той става най-популярният човек в България. И на 75 – продължава да е! Докато минавахме заедно през спомените му, аз се чудех как се удържа такава популярност. Какво се е случило през годините с този обичан артист, харесван мъж, последователен политик и щедър преподавател? Да застанеш лице в лице със спомените си е привилегия на смелите. Да подредиш пъзела от срещи, чувства, тревоги, успехи, разочарование... и самота, е усилие. Усилие на сърцето и паметта. Завиждам на Стефан Данаилов за лекотата, с която преминава през уязвимостта на времето. Тази книга е обяснение в любов към публиката. Тя е романът на неговия живот!“

Така журналистът и продуцент Георги Тошев представя работата си като съавтор по дългоочакваната биография на големия български актьор Стефан Данаилов. Книгата излезе на книжния пазар в България в навечерието на неговия 75 годишен юбилей.



Надали има българин, който да не познава Стефан Данаилов – красивият харизматичен български актьор. На 9 декември 2017 г. над 800 души аплодираха на крака в голямата зала на Народен театър „Иван Вазов“, рожденика. Сред гостите в публиката присъстваха президентът Румен Радев, Симеон Сакскобургготски, Йорданка Фандъкова – кмет на София, Цвета Караянчева – председател на Парламента, безброй представители на държавната власт, колеги, почитатели. Плеяда от актьори бяха първите поздравили рожденика. Студентите на Стефан Данаилов избухнаха в радостни възгласи в хор: „Честит рожден ден, Мастер!”, което изправи актьора на крака в знак на признателност. За първи път на свой юбилей Стефан Данаилов предпочете да седне сред публиката, която винаги го е подкрепяла и обичала, вместо да е на сцената, обясни по-късно той.



Декор на събитието бяха редуващите се видеокадри със сцени от филми като „Ах, тези жени”, „Следите остават”, „Иван Кондарев” и други, които припомниха звездната кариера на големия актьор, и различни откъси от книгата „Романът на моя живот”, прочетени от Мариан Маринов, Башар Рахал, Иван Бърнев и Владислав Карамфилов-Въргала и др. В края специален поздрав бе песента на Том Джоунс Sex Bomb в изпълнение на Дарин Ангелов и Деян Ангелов - нещо като химн на всички възпитаници на Данаилов, с което през годините обучение той ги е мотивирал да бъдат успешни и със самочувствие на сцената.

Министър Банов награди професор Стефан Данаилов с орден „Златен век” с огърлие на Министерството на културата за цялостен принос в областта на киното, театъра и културата.



Последната дума в емоционалното шоу, разбира се, беше на самия рожденик Стефан Данаилов:

„Винаги съм се отнасял с обич към хората, които са ми ръкопляскали на сцената, които са ми ръкопляскали на митинг. Правил съм го от сърце, а не защото някой ме е задължил. Благодаря!“ (...) „Най-вече благодаря на всички вас, които с нещо допринесохте в живота ми да бъда това, което съм днес на 75 години, макар че аз казвам, че съм на 750. Абе хора, много съм живял! Много съм видял! Много съм изял, много съм изпил“.

 „И тъй като пристига Нова година, аз искам да ви пожелая от сърце да сте живи и здрави, усмихнати! Усмихвайте се, хора, много е важно.”

Най-популярният и обичан актьор Стефан Данаилов едва ли е смогнал да отвори всички подаръци, но със сигурност направи най-подходящият реверанс към своята публика, като й поднесе за спомен от юбилея си красивото издание „Романът на моя живот” в съавторство с Георги Тошев.

Ambassador of the immeasurable human spirit

Nikolay Bozhikov says he is like all of us – he has a heart and soul. Yet his life is different and much more difficult. He calls himself a "dreamer, struggling with all his forces,trying to survive the trials of life". Literally. Niki suffers from a Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but even manages to joke, calling this diagnosis ‘’the cool illness." He is in this condition since his birth. The desiese is  blocking all his muscles and over the years Niki becomes completely immobile. Nikolay is in a wheelchair since the age of 8th. In 2005, his breathing has deteriorated, which has since been supported by a machine. He loses his voice. Nicki then stoped going out for 10 years. But some incredible power made him wants to fight for his life. Sam organizes a campaign with which he buys a special stroller with a breathing apparatus and gets his freedom again. Niki says that he is extremely grateful to good Bulgarians from home and abroad who helped him so that now he can enjoy his wonderful family and his recent 30th anniversary. His mother, father, sister, and two lovely nephews make him smile. Niki's  connection to the world is  his one hand, one keyboard and one mouse wired to a computer, which gives him the chance to freely express himself. "Sometimes I feel like the lonelier man on the ground, and sometimes I'm the happiest one, but I guess a lot of people are like this. We are not machines. The most important thing I can say is that I am much stronger than the illness, which has failed to conquere my heart and soul and can not stop me from dreaming! "

There is enormous energy and positivism within you. From where do you get that charge? Do you have some kind of personal rule - for example: wake up every morning and say ...?

I do not know exactly how this works, but that energy clearly comes from within, from my heart. I get charged and motivated by the people who manage to achieve great things. Also the love of my life without which I couldn’t go on, my favorite team CSKA, the meetings and conversations with my friends and the surrounding nature. I do not have a rule - I just know that life is worth living and every breath of air and every stroke of heart cost a million times more than gold. Even in my worst days I say: ‘’I'm going to sleep and I will get ready with fresh new forces for the new day, which hopefully will be better and bring me more smiles.’

One of your messages is that you want to make more dreams come true. What do you want to happen to you?

I find salvation in the dreams! I dream of being able to create a family - the most important and normal thing in the world. I want to have my own home, suitable and comfortable for my condition. I want to go out when I wish without caring about the stairs. Unfortunately, the situation in Bulgaria has forced me to dream endlessly without any results regarding medical services, visits by doctors or rehabilitation. I also dream to visit a lot of different countries, to see closely the beauties of the world, but a special car is also needed for this purpose. I flew a helicopter, but I need to raise the level by getting on an airplane. I want to see from very high our planet Earth, so I can be a step closer to flying in space. I would like to be able to observe the night sky as far as possible with the help of a telescope. I believe that all dreams can come true because nothing that you want so much can’t be impossible.

How does the world look like trough your eyes? Your city, our country?

The world is now a rather confused and not a easy place to live in, but there is hope for better times if there is still goodness in the hearts of people. I do not like the fact that material things and money have become the most important thing for us while  we think less about the power of the spirit. Because of work, responsibilities and problems, we sometimes forget to communicate, smile and be real people. Otherwise I like that the world is developing and new and useful for our future survival things are being invented.

My hometown Kalofer is a wonderful place that has kept our traditions over the years. Here is born Hristo Botev and his spirit is preserved - his great and struggling energy lives even in me and makes me not surrender. Also the nature here is divinely beautiful. It is bad that the city is developing slowly and it hasn’t yet reached 21st century. An initiative is needed - Kalofer is wonderful but somehow abandoned. There are few like our Homeland -  she is beautiful and yet we care so little about her. In our country, for example, people like me have hard lives, there are not enough accessible places, there is not enough help. I admit that there were times when I wanted to live abroad. But for me it would be difficult, and if everyone goes away, who will bring the change? I believe in my country, I love Bulgaria a lot, but I do not like our ignorance!



You write wonderfuly - inspiring, emotional and infectious!

Thanks for telling me that! I'm not doing something so impressive, just writing with my heart and trying to be always real. When I stayed home for almost 10 years, I had no idea what to do with my life. I wanted to use this old, dusty computer we had. At first I did not know I could write with it, i was just playing different games.  I did not even had Internet. I happened to find that there is a way to write with  a virtual keyboard and it somehow motivated me a lot! I dreamed of communicating with people on the Internet, in Bulgaria and around the world. It was hard for me, I was missing the letters all the time, but I was really motivated and had the strength to do it. I trained every day and then it became very easy. After having internet access, I started finding friends, which makes my days so joyfull. I can say boldly - that saved me from surrendering. It gets more and more tiring to write sentences because every day I have less and less energy, but I do not give up. It is worth writing.

You shared with me that you would like to work, be usefull for the others as well for yourself. How do you imagine your dream job?

I would very much like to work like everyone else and be independent, I don’t wish to take anyting for granted. Generally, I dream of working in a professional radio, being part of a team. I’ve tried runing an Internet radio, did it for almost 10 years, but on an amateur level. I already dream of a professional level. I really want to help develop my city with the help of music. I made a concert in Kalofer some time ago, but that's a small part of my overall idea. I dream of organizing more concerts who will make my city famous. Kalofer is in the center of Bulgaria and can become the center of the Bulgarian musical scene or, more precisely, a center for innovative music ideas. A very ambitious project, but why not - there are no impossible things and everything is achievable. Through such an idea, I could also create a professional radio, sound recording studio, music club, and so on. It will also help my health, to be better, to afford the most necessary things. For now, it's just an idea, but if I find people and sponsors to support me, I know that there may be a second, third, fourth concert very soon. This is how i will get closer to my goals and be useful! For the time being, I have only worked as a "dreamer", but it is time for action and work.

For us you are the Ambassador of the Immeasurable Human Spirit. This is your calling, this is what you can give to others. A tremendous wealth. Where is hiding the magic of your power?

The question is quite complex, I have no exact answer. My explanation is that I have hidden power within me and it somehow emerges in difficult times. I believe everyone has this power, but not everyone can find it when he does not believe enough in himself. The magic may be that I have a huge will to live and that I want more and more no matter how I feel. I have managed to keep the good in me, I have not turn evil, I do not complain. I am a wander in  this land and I have always struggled. That's what I do best. I have had many moments in which I simply can not stand - I have fallen, but then i’ve raised and became even stronger. I also realized that love is a great power and it helps me to see even more sense to live and fight for what the heart desires!

International Business Alliance.Bulgaria is an organization that aims to bring together all Bulgarians from all over the world. You reached to us and told us how wonderful this is. What would you like to say to such a large audience of compatriots from different parts of the world?

First of all, I would like to say that being able to turn to so many Bulgarians around the world is an honor and a great opportunity for me. I do not know how what I said will be accepted, but that's my story. I hope that as many people as possible can unite so we can be a big family because then we will be much stronger. We live in difficult times and no one has an easy life, but there are things worth fighting for so you can find even greater sense to live for. We are scattered everywhere, but our people are the great Bulgarian people. I believe everyone misses Bulgaria, because there is our root. I am sure that if we are together, no matter where, we can make the world better. I believe I will find many friends among you and, with their help and the Internet, I will be able to travel around the world. I am proud of all of you, although I do not know you personally, but it is enough for me that you supported and will keep on supporting the Alliance's idea, this wonderful union we need. Let’s more and more Bulgarians joins and let's show that we can do it together and we can help each other. Success!



 

Посланик на неизмеримия човешки дух

Николай Божиков споделя, че е като всички нас – със сърце и душа. И все пак животът му е различен и доста по-труден. Нарича себе си „мечтател, борещ се с много сили с изпитанията в живота“, за да може да оцелява. Буквално. Ники страда от мускулна дистрофия тип Дюшен, но успява дори с това да се шегува, наричайки тази диагноза „яката болест“.

Заболяването е по рождение, блокира всички мускули и с годините довежда до пълна неподвижност. Николай е в инвалидна количка от 8 годишен, през 2005 г. се влошава дишането му, което оттогава се поддържа с машина. Губи и гласа си. 10 години не излиза навън. Но някаква невероятна сила го кара да не губи духа си. Сам организира кампания, с която купува специална количка с дихателен апарат и получава отново свободата си. Ники споделя, че всичко това е благодарение на добри българи от родината и чужбина и че благодарение на тях и прекрасното му семейство, се радва на своя скорошен 30-ет годишен юбилей. Майка, татко, сестра и две прекрасни племеннички го карат да се усмихва. Връзката на Ники със света е едната му ръка, една клавиатура, една мишка – пише на компютър, което е неговата единствена възможност да общува с хората. „Понякога се чувствам като най-самотния човек на земята, а друг път съм пък най-щастливият, но така е при всички хора. Ние не сме машини. Най-важното, което мога да кажа е, че съм много по-силен от самото заболяване, то не е завладяло сърцето и душата ми и не може да ме спре да мечтая!“

В теб има огромна енергия и позитивизъм. Откъде черпиш този заряд и тази енергия? Имаш ли нещо твое, което ти е като правило - примерно: събуждаш се сутрин и си казваш...? 

Не зная как точно става това, но явно идва отвътре, от сърцето ми, тази енергия. Зареждат ме и ме мотивират хората, които са успели да постигнат велики неща. Също така ме зарежда много любовта на живота ми, без която не мога, любимият ми отбор ЦСКА, срещите и разговори с приятели и природата, която ни заобикаля. Нямам някакво правило - просто зная, че животът си струва да се живее и всяка глътка въздух и всеки удар на сърцето струват милион пъти повече от златото. Дори в най-тежките дни си казвам: лягам, спя и съм готов с нови сили за новия ден с усмивка и надежда да е по-добър.

Едно от твоите послания е, че искаш да сбъднеш повече мечти. Какво искаш да ти се случи?

В мечтите намирам спасение! Мечтая да имам възможност да създам свое семейство - най-важното и нормално нещо на света. Искам да имам свой дом, подходящ и удобен за моето състояние, да излизам, когато пожелая без пречката на стълбите. За съжаление ситуацията в България ме е принудила от години да мечтая, но без резултат относно медицински услуги, посещения от лекари и рехабилитация. Имам и мечта да пътешествам много в различни държави, за да видя красотите на света отблизо, но за целта е нужен и специален автомобил. Летях с хеликоптер, но е нужно да вдигна нивото като се кача и на самолет, да видя от високо нашата планета Земя и така да съм една идея по-близо до полет в космоса. Бих искал да мога да наблюдавам нощното небе възможно най-надалеч с помощта на телескоп. Вярвам, че всички мечти могат да се сбъднат, защото невъзможни неща няма, когато има огромно желание.



Как изглежда светът през твоите очи? Твоят град, родината ни?

Светът в момента е едно доста объркано и не леко място за живеене, но пък има надежда да се промени към добро, щом има все още доброта в сърцата на хората. Не ми харесва, че материалните неща и парите са станали най-важното нещо, а по-малко се мисли за силата на духа. Покрай работа, задължения и проблеми някак забравяме да общуваме, да се усмихваме и да бъдем истински хора. Иначе ми харесва, че светът се развива и се откриват нови неща, полезни за бъдещето ни оцеляване. Моят град Калофер е едно прекрасно място, запазило традициите ни през годините. Тук е роден Христо Ботев и духът му е запазен - дори и в мен живее неговият велик и борбен дух, което ме кара да не се предавам. Природата също е едно райско място. Лошо е, че градът се развива с бавни темпове и все още не е в 21 век.  Нужна е инициатива - Калофер е прекрасен, но някак изоставен.  Малко като Родината ни - красива, но не се грижим за нея достатъчно.  У нас например трудно живеят хора като мен, няма достатъчно достъпни места, няма достатъчно помощ. Признавам, че е имало моменти – искал съм да замина навън.  Но за мен това би било трудно, а и ако всички заминат, кой ще се бори за промяната.  Вярвам в нея, обичам България много, но не харесвам бездействието ни!



Пишеш прекрасно - вдъхновено, емоционално и заразително!

Благодаря за тази оценка! Не правя нещо чак толкова впечатляващо, просто пиша със сърцето си и гледам да бъда винаги истински. Когато останах у дома за близо 10 години, нямах идея какво да правя с живота си. Прииска ми се да използвам стария, хванал прах компютър. В началото не знаех ще мога ли да пиша, само играех на игрите, които имаше. Дори интернет нямах. Случайно открих, че има начин с виртуална клавиатура да пиша и това някак ме мотивира много! Мечтаех да общувам с хора в интернет, в България и по света. Трудно ми беше, не уцелвах лесно буквите, но мотивацията е велико нещо и ми даваше сила. Тренирах всеки ден и после стана много лесно. След като вече имах интернет, започнах да откривам приятели, което прави дните ми щастливи. Смело мога да кажа - това ме спаси да не се предам. Изморително е  така да се пише всяко едно изречение, защото имам все по-малко сила, но не се отказвам. Струва си да пиша.

Ти сподели с мен, че би искал да работиш, да си полезен както на другите, така и на себе си. Как си представяш мечтаната работа?

Много бих искал да работя като всички останали и да съм независим, да не чакам наготово. По принцип мечтая да работя в професионално радио, да съм част от екип. Правих опити за интернет радио, занимавах се близо 10 години, но на аматьорско ниво. Вече мечтая за професионално ниво. Много искам с музика да помогна за развитието на града ми. Правих преди време концерт в Калофер, но това е малка част от цялостната ми идея. Мечтая да организирам още концерти, които да прославят моя град. Калофер е в центъра на България и може да стане център на музиката в страната ни или по-точно като център за иновативни музикални идеи. Твърде амбициозен проект, но пък защо не - няма невъзможни неща и всичко е постижимо.  Чрез подобна идея бих могъл да създам и професионално радио, звукозаписно студио, музикален клуб и т.н. Това ще бъде в помощ и на самото ми здравословно състояние, да съм по-добре, да си позволя най-нужните неща. За сега е само идея, но ако открия хора и спонсори, които биха ме подкрепили, знам, че много скоро може да има втори, трети, четвърти концерт. Така ще се приближа до целта и ще бъда полезен! Засега съм работил само професията „мечтател“, но е време за действия и да се потрудя!

За нас ти си Посланик на неизмеримия човешки дух. Това е твоето призвание, това е, което ти можеш да дадеш на другите. Едно огромно богатство. Къде се крие магията на твоята сила? 

Въпросът е доста сложен, нямам точен отговор. Обяснението ми е, че имам вътре в мен скрита сила и тя някак изплува в трудните моменти. Вярвам, че всеки има такава сила, но не всеки умее да я открие, когато не вярва достатъчно в себе си. Магията може би се крие в това, че имам огромен хъс за живот и все повече ми се живее без значение какво ми е. Все още съм запазил доброто в себе, не съм се озлобил, не се оплаквам. Чудо съм на тази земя и винаги съм се борил. Това умея най-добре. Имал съм много моменти, в които просто не издържам - падал съм, но съм се изправял още по-силен. Разбрах и, че любовта е велика сила и много ми помага да виждам още по-голям смисъл да живея и да се боря за това, което желае сърцето!

В трудни времена живеем и на никой никъде не му е лесно, но има неща, за които си струва да се бориш, за да има още по-голям смисъл. Разпръснати сме навсякъде, но нашият народ е великия български народ. Вярвам, че на всеки му е много мила България, защото там е коренът ни. Сигурен съм, че ако сме заедно, без значение къде, можем да направим света по-добър.  Вярвам, че ще намеря сред вас много  приятели и с тяхна помощ и интернет, ще успея да пътувам по света. Гордея се с всички вас, макар да не ви познавам лично, но на мен ми стига това, че сте подкрепили и ще подкрепяте идеята на Алианса. На това прекрасно обединение, от което имаме нужда. Присъединете се още и още и нека покажем, че ние можем заедно и можем да си помогнем един на друг. Успех!

Като при всяко нетуърк събитие, голяма част от времето бе посветна на комуникация между гостите, размяна на визитки, споделен опит и идеи между тях. IBA.Bulgaria launch event

“Networking is an essential part of building wealth.”, Armstrong Williams

In these days of constantly evolving communications technologies, we find the moments we get a chance for ‘face to face’ conversations with old and new friends increasingly valuable.

The founders and team of the International Business Alliance.Bulgaria had the honour and pleasure to welcome over 200 guests to the first official event of the organisation. On October 12, the the event in the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in London hosted many representatives of the business and cultural industries and launched the only alliance of Bulgarian entrepreneurship worldwide.



"Networking, career opportunities, educational and qualification support, shared professional experience, consultations with leading experts from different business areas and in different parts of the world - this is only a part of the opportunities that the International Business Alliance’s networking platform will offer to its members”, said Miroslav Bogdantsaliev, one of the two founders of the Alliance.

His business partner in the idea and development of this large project, the talented artist Paola Minekov, presented the concept and team of the official media of the International Business Alliance.Bulgaria -  the international business magazine Elysium. All guests received a copy of the pilot issue of the magazine with the wish to have many exciting business news to share in the upcoming editions.

As with any networking event, much of the time was devoted to communicating between guests, exchanging business cards and sharing experiences and ideas. The event was attended by Mr Vladimir Tudzharov, Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Bulgaria and Ms Lilia Ivanova, Head of the Cabinet of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Bulgaria, who expressed their unconditional support for the Alliance, as well as representatives of the showbizness community such as TV Host Niki Kunchev, actress Desi Tenekedzhieva, the young and very successful actor Julian Kostvo and others. Tanya Koycheva, Head of the Office for Trade and Economic Affairs in the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in London and Zarko Yankov, representative of City Club, London, expressed their sympathy.

Hennessy - more than just cognac

In 1745 the Irish ship captain Richard Hennessy, a fleet officer of the French king Louis V, discovered the region of Charente and the city of Cognac during battle. Enchanted by the beautiful French countryside, he chose this spot to create Hennessy 20 years later. He was known to have shared that it was only thanks to his family's acquaintances and to the contacts he has made during his travels around the world, that the Hennessy cognac could reached hundreds of points worldwide so fast.
This is the power and importance of the network of contacts - as rated 3 centuries ago.

The facts speak for themselves. Hennessy became a supplier of cognac to aristocratic and royal homes in Europe, including the French King, the Russian King Alexander I, the English King George IV, and so on. The first quantities of cognac for the United States left in 1794, after which the drink reached shores of India, Russia, South America, Australia, China and Japan. By 1860, a quarter of all cognacs in the world bore the name of Hennessy. By 1865 Richard Hennessy's cognac had reached all continents.

In 1813, Richard's son James gave the company the name it still bears today: Jas Hennessy & Co. Since 1765 and to this day, eight generations of the family have maintained and developed the brand, unsurpassable quality and prestige of the alcoholic beverage. To ensure its sustainability, in 1971 Hennessy united with Moët & Chandon, setting up the Moët Hennessy group. This led to a massive development and a doubling of sales over the next 15 years. In 1987, the brand joined in alliance with Louis Vuitton, launching LVMH - the most significant French luxury group.

Behind this story are hidden many years of tradition, the life work of entire families, and a passion for maintaining the highest quality of drink. This can be traced "live" if you visit the Hennessy headquarters in Cognac - the only place in the world where cognac is made. Visits are organised to the cellars and the Hennessy Space. Located in the company's oldest cellars, where wood-beamed ceilings and blackened walls testify to long years of existence, this space offers an interactive walk through the company’s history, as well as information about the whole process of the creation of the fragrant amber drink. Hennessy’s guests also have the chance to visit a small contemporary art gallery, as well as an elegant boutique. The visit of Hennessy ends with a professional tasting that completes the magic of a world where traditions dominate for more than three centuries ... And no doubt - finding out all its intricate details may leave you in dismay.

The cognac goes a long way from the vine to the consumer. Only white grapes of the variety Ugni Blanc - aromatic and especially adapted for distillation - are used for its production. In order to ensure the exclusivity of its flavours, Hennessy grows grapes in 4 protected and controlled regions: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies et Fins Bois, spread over 600 hectares of vineyards and more than 2,500 vine growers. Following double distillation in copper vessels, largely identical to the first ones of three centuries ago, the cognac is stored in oak barrels. To date, they are still made by hand and their master is one of the most revered workers in the company. He himself comes from the family who has been responsible for this task for over a hundred years. The master personally selects the most suitable among the two-eyed oaks - mostly in the French forest Tronçais, sown for the needs of the Louis XIV fleet. Of course, the company plants new trees for each one they cut down. The planks of these oaks are then dried for three years. Then the boards are split and tightened with metallic hoops by hand. The whole process hasn't changed for centuries. No machines, no modern technology. Ropes of special fabric wrap the barrels - if there are parasites that can attack the barrels, they will first appear on those ropes. In the barrels, the smell of cognac is enough to leave you dazzled - you do not even need to drink.

Over 300,000 barrels of brandy are kept in Hennessy's reserves. Each year, from April to September, every day at exactly 11 am, a committee of seven tasters tests each vintage that matures in the oak barrels and decides how to sort every one of them. Those which are ripening go to glass-faced decanters (dames-jeannes), dressed in a knit wicker, so that no light can penetrate and damage the drink. The oldest ones have kept cognac since 1800. This is Hennessy's gold, it's kept under lock.

Masters of the tasting group are Hennessy`s successor (currently a seventh generation Hennessy, who will hand over the baton to his nephew - the 8th generation, in June 2018) and Maître Yann Fillioux - responsible for the development and ageing of the drink. Six generations of the family, since 1802, have had the most responsible task, the one of preserving the style, taste and quality of production. These are the people who make the 'assemblage' (blends). In time, the crops change in taste. The unique task is to combine different age beverages, to always achieve the same taste and quality of each blend: VS (Very Special), XO (eXtra Old), Hennessy Paradis in the famous bottle-carafe X. Oh, Paradis Impérial (19th-century cognac assemblage), Richard Hennessy, named after its creator. It has gathered 250 years of knowledge and it’s placed in crystal decanters, each with its own number and a price tag of over EUR 3000.

An absolute leader in cognac trade, today Hennessy is sold in over 130 countries around the world. Annually, more than 50 million bottles reach different corners of the planet and enchant with the flavour the precious drink. According to the company's statistics, due to the specifics of the product and its production, almost 6 million bottles of cognac evaporate every year. What a loss for the connoisseurs of this amber treasure! But, as traditions dictate, this is the risk of preserving quality.

Hennessy – нещо повече от коняк

Франция. 1745 г. Ирландският капитан на кораб, Ричард Хенеси, офицер от флотата на френския крал Луи 15-ти, открива региона Шарант и град Коняк по време на битка. Запленен от това красиво кътче от Франция, след 20 години, през 1765 г., създава на същото място компанията Hennessy. Няколко години по-късно той споделя, че благодарение на познанствата на неговото семейство и на всички контакти създадени по време на пътешествията му по света, конякът Hennessy достига много бързо до стотици точки по света. Мощта и значимостта на мрежата от контакти - оценена още преди 3 века.

Фактите говорят сами. За кратко време Hennessy става доставчик на коняк на аристократични и кралски домове в Европа, включително френския крал, руския Цар Александър I, английския крал Джордж IV и т.н. Първите количества коняк за САЩ заминават през 1794 г., в последствие напитката стига до Индия, Русия, Южна Америка, Австралия, Китай, Япония... От 1765 г. до днес осем поколения на семейството се редуват, за да пазят и развиват марката, стабилното качество и престижа на алкохолната напитка. За да осигури своята устойчивост, през 1971 г. Hennessy се обединява с Moët & Chandon, поставяйки начало на групата Moët Hennessy. Именно това довежда до мащабно развитие и удвояване на продажбите през следващите 15 години. През 1987 г., групата влиза в алианс с Louis Vuitton, което слага началото на LVMH – най-значимата френска група на лукса.

Зад тази история обаче се крият многогодишни традиции, труд на много хора, цели семейства и страст към запазване на най-високо ниво в качеството на напитката. Това може да се проследи „на живо“, ако се посети централата на Hennessy в гр. Коняк – единственото място в света, където се произвежда конякът. За посетителите се организират визити в избите и музея на Hennessy - пространство съчетаващо минало и бъдеще. Организирано в най-старите изби на компанията, където дървени греди по тавана и почернели стени свидетелстват за дългите години на съществуване, това пространство предлага интерактивна разходка в историята на компанията, както и информация за целия процес, който довежда до ухаещата кехлибарена напитка. Гостите на Hennessy преминават и през малка галерия за съвременно изкуство, както и през елегантен бутик. Визитата в Hennessy завършва с професионална дегустация, която довършва магията на един свят, в който властват традиции от три столетия... И без съмнение – преживяваш шок, откривайки за какви детайли става въпрос.

Конякът изминава дълъг път от лозата до потребителя. За производството му се използва само бяло грозде сорт Юни Блан – ароматно и специално адаптирано за дестилацията. За да подсигури изключителността на своите аромати, Hennessy отглежда грозде в четири защитени и контролирани региона: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies et Fins Bois. 600 хектара лозя, за които се грижат над 2500 лозари. След двойна дестилация в медни съдове, до голяма степен идентични с първите от преди три века, конякът се съхранява в дъбови бъчви. И то не какви да е! И до днес те се изработват на ръка и техният майстор е един от най-почитаните работници в компанията. Самият той от семейство, което прави това повече от сто години. Майсторът лично избира сред двувековните дъбове кое дърво да се отсече -  предимно във френската гора Тронсе, засята за нуждите на флотата на Луи 14-ти. Разбира се, компанията засажда нови дървета за всяко отсечено. Талпите от тези дъбове съхнат три години. След което дъските се дялкат на ръка и се стягат с металните обръчи на ръка... Целият процес е точно така, както се е правил векове назад. Няма машини, няма модерни технологии. Въжета от специална материя обвиват бъчвите – ако има паразити, които могат да нападнат бъчвите, първо ще се появят по тези въжета. В избите с бъчвите уханието на коняк е достатъчно, за да се омаеш – не е нужно дори да пиеш.

Над 300 000 барела коняк са резервите на Hennessy. Всяка година от април до септември, всеки ден точно в 11 ч. комитет от седем дегустатори прави тест на всяка реколта, която зрее в дъбовите бъчви. Решава се с коя какво е необходимо да се направи. Тези, на които се спира зреенето, отиват в дамаджани – стъклени, облечени с плетена ракита, за да не прониква светлина, която може да увреди напитката. Най-старите дамаджани съхраняват коняк от 1800 година. Това е златото на Hennessy, то се държи под ключ.

Мастърите на дегустаторската група са наследникът на Hennessy (в момента седмо поколение, през юни 2018 г. ще предаде щафетата на своя племенник – осмо поколение Hennessy) и Ян Фийу – отговорен за развитието и стареенето на напитката. Шест генерации от неговото семейство, още от 1802 г., имат най-отговорната задача  - да съхранят стила, вкуса и качеството на продукцията. Това са и хората, които правят т.нар. асамблаж (смесване). Във времето реколтите се променят като вкус. Уникалната задача е да се направи такъв примес на различните по възраст напитки, че да се постигне винаги един и същ вкус и качество на всеки бленд: VS (Very Special), XO (eXtra Old), Hennessy Paradis в известната бутилка-гарафа Х.О, Paradis Impérial (коняк съставен от резерви от 19 век), Richard Hennessy – на името на своя създател, събрал 250 годишни знания и поставен в кристални бутилки-гарафи, всяка със собствен номер и цена от над 3000 евро.

Абсолютен лидер в търговията с коняк, днес Hennessy се продава в над 130 държави по целия свят. Годишно над 50 милиона бутилки достигат различни кътчета на планетата и омайват с аромата на напитката в тях. По статистика на компанията, поради спецификата на продукта и производството, всяка година в пространството се изпаряват почти шест милиона бутилки коняк... Каква загуба за ценителите на кехлибареното съкровище. Но това е рискът за запазване на качеството. Традициите го повеляват.

There are no limits to music creativity in Amsterdam

For those who visit the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) for the first time, the experience can turn into a lasting cultural shock. Although prepared with enough information, during my first visit of this cultural event, I was unable to withstand the size and impetus of the festival. For 5 days, Amsterdam turned into a huge playground for grown ups, where the only rules were the limits of human creativity.

The festival focuses on electronic music and its influence on other cultural spheres. Interviews with artists, master classes with proven names on the world stage, new audiovisual technologies, discussions on the vast possibilities of acoustics, all sorts of "gadgets" and a lot more await those who dare to get lost in the streets of Amsterdam, only to find what the future can bring. Because of its size, this event undoubtedly transforms the world as we know it into an endless tales of emotion and music. I have visited various interesting places around the world, but I have never felt so powerless standing before the diversity of a cultural event.



The meeting point of the festival is considered to be the ADE Hangout place in the transformed especially for the occasion theatre De Brakke Grond, located a minute away from The Dam Square – the heart of Amsterdam’s street life. Here were the ADE panel halls, where all the conferences, sound laboratories and workshops with names like Dave Clarke, Reinier Zonneveld, Joris Voorn, Nina Kravitz, Surgeon, Anthony Rother took place. Along with this stream of information, every visitor had the chance to test the latest technology hits from manufactures such as Roland, Native Instruments, Pioneer, Novation, Ableton and many others. Personally, I didn’t feel nearly as excited at Christmas as a kid, as I did in the middle of these halls filled with "toys for grown ups."

The next 50 pages would not have been enough to describe everything inspiring I encountered during these few days. One of the turning points of the whole trip happened on Friday when I was at a live performance of the best of Bulgarian electronic music - KiNK, who tested new sample players from Pioneer. Perhaps a more accurate word in this case would not have been testing, rather it was demonstrating to Pioneer how to use their own gear. Strahil Velchev is probably the most innovative figure in the whole history of Bulgarian electronic music, but we’ll go back to his story in an exclusive feature, due to the special attention that it requires. In the moments when I listened to KiNK, I felt proud of the huge influence a Bulgarian has on culture internationally. At times like these, I strongly believe in the immense opportunities of International Business Alliance.Bulgaria, whose purpose is precisely to connect and promote Bulgarian talent and business opportunities.

The real magic of the Amsterdam Dance Event happened beyond the walls of De Brakke Grond. Every corner of the city became a musical world of its own. Turning to a small street you never knew what awaits you - a favourite artist in a plate shop, an improvised party at a city square – behind every corner there was a little musical surprise waiting to be discovered.
This event is a true example of the power of a society that is subject to a common goal.

Starting from the Central Station and reaching the far districts of Amsterdam, various parts of the city were painted yellow, symbolising that ADE had been there. This festival blurs the boundaries between business and fun, involving everyone on it’s way, giving one of the strongest examples I know about the fact that together we have better fun and together we are more progressive.

В Амстердам няма граници за музикалната креативност

За тези, които за първи път посещават Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), преживяването може да се превърне в културен шок, отшумяващ дълго време. Макар и предварително подготвен с не малко информация, по време на първото ми посещение на това културно събитие не успях да устоя на размерите и въвличащата сила на едноименния фестивал. В рамките на 5 дни, Амстердам се превръща в една огромна игрална площадка за възрастни, където единствените правила са границите на човешката креативност.

Фестивалът е съсредоточен върху електронната музика и влиянието й върху останалите културни сфери. Интервюта с артисти, мастер класове с доказани имена от световната сцена, нови аудиовизуални технологии, разисквания върху необятните възможности на акустиката, всевъзможни „джаджи“ и какво ли още не очакват тези, които дръзнат да се изгубят из улиците на Амстердам, само и само да намерят това, което бъдещето може да донесе. Защото размерите на това събитие без съмнение преобразуват света, такъв какъвто го познаваме, в една безкрайна приказка от емоция и музика. Посещавал съм различни интересни места по света, но никога не съм се чувствал толкова безсилен към разнообразието на дадено културно събитие.



Сборна точка на фестивала се счита ADE Hangout place в трансформирания специално за случая театър De Brakke Grond, разположен на една минута от The Dam Square – там, където е разгарът на живота в Амстердам. Тук бяха панелните зали на ADE, където се случваха всички конференции, саунд лаборатории и уоркшопове с имена като Dave Clarke, Reinier Zonneveld, Joris Voorn, Nina Kravitz, Surgeon, Anthony Rother… Паралелно с този поток от информация, всеки посетител имаше възможността да пробва най-новите хитове в технологиите от любимите за ценителите компании като Roland, Native Instruments, Pioneer, Novation, Ableton и много други. Лично аз не се чувствам толкова развълнуван на Коледа, колкото бях по средата на тези зали, пълни с “играчки за възрастни”. Следващите 50 страници не биха ми стигнали, за да опиша всичко вдъхновяващо, до което се докоснах по време на тези дни.

Една от повратните точки от цялото пътешествие се случи в петък, когато присъствах на живото изпълнение на златото на българската електрона музика -  KiNK, който тестваше нови плейъри от Pioneer. Може би по-правилната дума в случая би била не тестваше, а демонстрираше на Pioneer как те самите да използват собствената си техника. Страхил Велчев е може би най-иновативната фигура в цялата история на българската електронна музика, но неговата история ще бъде разказана в бъдеще поради специалното внимание, което изисква. В моментите, в които слушах KiNK, се чувствах горд от огромното влияние, което един българин има върху световната култура. Точно в моменти като тези вярвам силно в необятните възможности на Международния Бизнес Алианс България, чиято цел е именно да свърже и промотира български таланти и бизнес възможности.

Истинската магия на Amsterdam Dance Event се случваше отвъд стените на De Brakke Grond. Всяко едно кътче от града бе превърнато в малка музикална идилия. Завивайки към някоя малка уличка никога не знаеш какво те очаква – любим артист в магазин за плочи, импровизирано парти на някой градски площад – чака те музика зад всеки ъгъл. Това събитие е същински пример за мощта на едно общество, която е подчинено на обща цел. Започвайки от Централната гара, стигайки до крайните квартали на Амстердам, различни кътчета бяха обагрени в жълто, символизирайки, че ADE е стигнал и до този праг. Това културно събитие размива границите между бизнеса и забавлението, въвличайки всеки по пътя си, давайки един от най-силните примери, които са ми познати, за факта, че заедно се забавляваме по-добре и заедно вървим напред по-лесно.

Paola Minekov acknowledges the importance of networking in her career.

Паола Минекова живее в Лондон от 2008 г. Талантлива художничка и мултимедиен дизайнер, тя е привлечена от космополитната култура на британската столица. Творчеството на Паола е вдъхновено от контраста на исторически и ултрамодерни енергии в града.

Тя черпи вдъхновение и от художественото наследство на родината си България, където живеят родителите й. Неин баща и наставник е известният скулптор Иван Минеков. Паола съчетава българската стилистика и артистични тенденции – получава част от образованието си в София, със съвременната лондонска художествена сцена. Резултатите са зашеметяващи.

“Бих искала да подчертая какво огромно значение за кариерата ми има мрежата от контакти”, казва Паола. “Всеки път, когато се местех в друга държава – живяла съм в Израел и Холандия преди да дойда в Обединеното кралство - изграждах всичко наново. Бях в непрестанно търсене на нови контакти и срещи с хора. Когато се преместих в Лондон и започнах да участвам в нетуърк събития, кариерата ми наистина полетя!“

Освен откриването на възможности за срещи с вълнуващи хора, новите контакти отварят врати за големи художествени проекти. Паола участва в самостоятелни и партньорски изложби, в обществени художествени проекти като първия Faberge Big Egg Hunt и Elephant Parade National Tour. Автор е на стенната “Вековна Мозайка“ (“CENTENARY MOSAIC” - Institue of Education Students`Union Community Mural”, London) и много други.

“Cилата на взаимоотношенията в мрежа ме вдъхновяват и аз съм уверена, че Международен Бизнес Алианс.България може да бъде изключително поле за подкрепа на българския бизнес, който да открие нови възможности за разрастване на широка международна основа”, споделя Паола.

Даровитата художничка се надява, че IBA.Bulgaria ще помогне и на младите хора, като съдейства за тяхното лично и професионално развитие, предлагайки им достъпен и бърз начин за свързване с подходящите хора във всяка индустрия – тези, които биха могли да им помогнат в началото на тяхната кариера.

Една от личните амбиции на Паола е да популяризира българското изкуство на международно ниво: “Убедена съм, че IBA ще бъде брилянтна възможност в постигането на тази цел!”

The Art of Meeting People

Paola Minekov acknowledges the importance of networking in her career.

Talented artist and multimedia designer Paola Minekov has lived in London since 2008 and loves the capital's vibrant cosmopolitan culture. The city's contrast of the historic with the ultra modern energises and inspires her work.

Paola also draws on her artistic heritage from her native Bulgaria, where her family still live. Her father and mentor is the well known sculptor Ivan Minekov. Paola fuses Bulgarian stylistics and artistic trends, which she studied in Sofia, with the contemporary London art scene and the results are stunning.

'I cannot emphasise enough the important role that networking has played in my career', said Paola. 'Each time I moved to a different country - I lived in Israel and The Netherlands before coming to the UK - I  built a life anew. I did this by being open to making connections and meeting new people. Then when I moved to London and started to network formally, my career really took off!'

As well as creating opportunities to meet exciting people, networking has opened the doors to major artistic projects. Paola exhibited in the first ever Faberge Egg Hunt, decorated the sponsor's elephant for the Intu Elephant Parade National Tour, and led the creation of a student community mosaic mural at London's Institute of Education.

'I am really enthusiastic about the power of networking and am confident that IBA can help Bulgarian businesses make a bigger impact on a broader canvas,' said Paola.

Paola hopes IBA.Bulgaria will also help young people nurture their personal and professional development by offering them an easy way of connecting with the right people, in any industry, who could help them at the beginning of their careers.

Birth of a Network

Miroslav Bogdantsaliev saw a clear need for help with local business knowledge when entering foreign markets.

Miroslav Bogdantsaliev arrived in the UK in 2000 and initially engaged independently with various building projects.

His boldness of thought and intuition in finding new challenges to overcome gave him the impetus to create his first company Avalon Building and Decorating Contractors Ltd in 2005. Miroslav does not set limits, allowing clients’ dreams to happen, yet his projects are delivered to precise specifications and without compromising on quality. This is the basis of the dynamic development of his incredibly fast paced company. Today, Avalon has won a number of prestigious awards including Build magazine’s ‘Construction Top 50 Awards 2016’ in Southeastern England, ‘Defining the World 2016’ and ‘Interior Design Best of 2016’.



More recently, Miroslav has participated in new business projects in the field of construction, real estate and investment.

Идеалните събития

Всеки, който има поне малко опит в тази област ще ви каже, че събитийният мениджмънт може да изглежда измамно лесен отстрани. Докато не опиташ, почти със сигурност няма да вярваш на хората, занимаващи се с това, когато ти казват какъв стрес и колко организация стои дори зад най-безобидното събитие.



Има много строго професионални сфери, за които хората си мислят, че са лесни. Вземете тичането. То е лесно. Всеки може да тича. Е, пробвайте да бягате като Юсеин Болт. Именно. И точно тук е разликата между професионалиста и любителя. И със събитията е така.
Управлението на събития е много голяма тема, просто защото те идват във всякакви форми и размери, за всякакви аудитории. Има нишови събития, на които са поканени 15 души, и масови, на които идват хиляди. От семинар, през сватба, коктейл, маратон и форум до концерт - това са все събирания, които някой трябва да организира така, че гостите/посетителите/участниците да са доволни.

Всяко професионално организирано събитие има няколко основни етапа:

• изследване (проучване)


• измисляне (концепция)


• планиране


• координация и реализация


• оценяване
  
  Всеки един от тези етапи съдържа много елементи.

На етапа на планирането трябва да си отговорите на основни въпроси като "Защо го правим?", "Към какви хора е насочено?", "Кога и къде е подходящо да го организираме?". Правят се т.нар. SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) анализи, проверява се за конкурентни събития в същия период и др.

Неслучайно събитията трябва да се планират много преди момента на провеждането им. Да, не може за утре, съжалявам. И за други ден не може. (Тук изключвам извънредни обстоятелства, при които може и за днес, но те не са представителни за реалната работа.)
При нормален ритъм рутинно събитие, което вече е в календара ни, имаме опит при организиране на подобно, малко е по мащаб и има семпъл сценарий, отнема между една и две седмици подготовка. И това, при условие, че всички замесени знаят за него предварително и са потвърдили, че нямат други ангажименти в този ден.


За съжаление обаче няма кратко упътване за организиране на мероприятия. Това е така, защото няма значение колко сте организирали досега, всяко е различно (даже когато е еднакво с предишното). Първо, всяко събитие се случва на живо и няма как да е еднакво с каквото и да е преди. Второ, колкото и да сте опитни, е невъзможно да предвидите безкрайното разнообразие от възможни неща, които могат да се объркат. Сервитьорка с изкълчен глезен, спукана гума, залят с течност компютър, водещи, болни от най-модерния за сезона грип, спиране на електричеството и какво ли още не стои между вас и вашето хубаво събитие.

The Perfect Event

Anyone who has at least some experience in the area of event management will tell you that it can look deceptively easy from the outside. Until you try, you will almost certainly not believe event organisers when they tell you how much stress and planning is involved in even the most harmless event.



There are many professional spheres which appear easy at first glance. Take running. It's easy. Everyone can run. Sure, but try running like Usain Bolt. Not so easy now, is it? And here lies the difference between the professional and the amateur. The same logic applies to events.

Event management is a very big topic simply because events come in all shapes and sizes and are targeted at a wide range of audiences. There are niche events for just 15 people, and massive ones, attended by thousands. From a seminar, wedding, cocktail, marathon and forum to a concert - these are all gatherings which need to be organised in a way that leaves the guests, visitors and participants happy.

Each professionally organised event goes through several main stages:

• research


• concepting


• planning


• coordination and realisation


• evaluation

Each of these stages contains many elements.

At the planning stage, you have to answer the basic questions like "Why are we doing it?", "What kind of people are we targeting?", "When and where is it appropriate to organise it?". We need to perform a SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis, check for competitive events in the same period, and more.

Events should be planned long before they are held. Yes, I can’t organise your event for tomorrow, sorry. And not for the day after tomorrow either. (Here I exclude extraordinary circumstances that may require us to respond today, but they are not representative of the real job.)

At a normal pace, we have the experience to organise a routine small scale event with a simple scenario, which is already in our calendar, within one to two weeks. This is the case only provided that all parties involved know of it in advance and have confirmed that they have no other commitments on that day.

Unfortunately there is no shortcuts guide to organising events. It does not matter how many events you have organised so far, each new one is different (even when it is the same as before). First, every event happens live and cannot be the same as anything before. Second, no matter how experienced you are, it is impossible to predict the infinite variety of possible things that can go wrong. A waitress with a twisted ankle, a ruptured tyre, a flooded computer, presenters sick with the latest flu this season, a power cut, and everything else left standing between you and your perfect event.

Look forward to my 10 best tips of how to create an almost perfect event in Elysium's preview issue. I have tried to recommend a few basic things that can help reduce the risk of mistakes. This is by no means an exhaustive list (10 tips can’t cover this), but it is a basis that you can use.

The Castle of the Sleeping Beauty

A dear friend once called me a ‘Thing Finder’, just like Pippi Longstocking. It looks like I am, and it looks like I like it that way :)

So let me tell what I found the other day. The Castle of the Sleeping Beauty. I knew it was somewhere here, but I must admit I knew nothing about the castle itself. Now I’ve learned it’s secrets.

They call it The Castle of the Sleeping Beauty because its architecture and location - hidden at the foot of a forest hill - has inspired Charles Perrault to write the famous tale, whose original title is actually "La Belle au Bois Dormant" - The Sleeping Forest Beauty. The Château d'Ussé and its chapel, named after Sainte Anna, were built more than 500 years ago. At the entrance of the castle, a sign informs curious visitors that its owner, the grandson of Duc de Blacas, still lives there. The family has owned the castle for over two centuries and is dedicated to continually restoring it, day after day, month after month, year after year.  A myriad of specialists are involved in the restorations, and the works are supported by entrance fees and donations. Each and every one of the castle’s nooks and crannies are painstakingly brought to their former glory.. In a short video, screening in one of the stone cellars, we meet a sculptor who has spent the last 15 years restoring the facades and their ornaments and a master roofer who shares that people come and go, yet the castle remains and they have an obligation to care for it ...

The beautiful park is designed by the emblematic French gardener Le Nôtre. Take a stroll down stunning floral alleys à la française and you’ll also encounter the two century old oaks, a gift by Chateaubriand to the then lady of the castle, dating back to 1808. (We’ll leave the story of the parade meal of Chateaubriand  for another time :)).

You can also visit the old cellars and stables of the castle, before finally entering the castle itself. And there ... there you go back in time and actually enter the fairy tale. You are climbing to the top of the Tower up a narrow stone staircase. In small rooms, behind glass, moments of the fairy tale are imaginatively recreated. You find yourself in an old attic, supported by wooden beams and full of cobwebs, filled with a treasure of antiques. A papyrus scripture tells you that the attics of castles are those places that hide secrets, mysteries, treasures ... And then, after experiencing the Tower, where the Prince has awakened his Beauty, you walk down the castle's halls.

Only a few halls have been restored where original furniture, personal belongings and artworks are displayed. Exhibitions are held periodically in some of the rooms as well. This season there is an expo of 18th-century velvet dresses, absolutely beautiful and exquisite. The castle is like a time machine - you forget about the present and for a brief moment find yourself into an ancient fairytale world ...

The Road Less Travelled

Some time ago I visited Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in Northern Spain.  My inspiration came from the Scottish connection. I absolutely love everything about Celtic heritage and the idea of seeing Spanish Celts in Kilts playing Scottish music on pipes intrigued me. On that visit, I saw many pilgrims in Santiago, which is the destination of many Camino walks, but I would have never have imagined  I would be one of them 5 years later, walking 780km across Northern Spain. The seed was planted in my mind on that visit and just grew stronger.

The next milestone was watching the movie “The Way“ with Martin Sheen, a film about an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James.

It was such a strong impulse. I read a few Camino forums, and jogged for a month to improve my stamina in the local park. Soon, I was ready for the new adventure. I packed my rucksack very lightly with the bare minimum (absolutely crucial as you need to carry it all the way).  Even carrying a camera sounded too heavy, and I could use the camera on my phone instead. I decided to divide my Camino into 4 parts and do it in stages, year by year. I simply didn’t have 30 days of holiday to do it in one go. I have to admit I was scared of failure as I had never walked such long distances (average 20 km per day) with a rucksack. However, I knew there was something bigger than myself and I was just a part of the big master plan, it was my destiny and I would be fine.

The Way of St James was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during the middle ages.
The legend holds that St James’ remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain, where he was buried in the city of Santiago de Compostela. In the 1980s the Camino underwent a revival of its popularity, attracting increasing the numbers of modern pilgrims. In 1987, the route was declared the first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe; it was also named one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.

I wasn’t sure what I was looking for but I just knew I would find my answers there. It all sounded very exciting; a less is more philosophy, travelling light, taking the bare minimum, basic accommodation, no distractions, walking in beautiful nature - so different from living in busy London trapped in commuting, constant crowds, overwhelming news, shopping, eating, being spoiled for choice. I needed to go away on my spiritual retreat and remove myself from the bustle of modern life.

No expectations, no controlling of the outcome in my head, just an open mind and heart. I decided to treat each person who I was going to meet as a gift from God; embracing, trusting and inviting each day as it comes, going closer to the destination.

And so I found myself in Rascavalles in the Basque Country (second stop after St Jean Pied de Port). The idea of walking through the Pyrenees on the first day didn’t sound right for my level of fitness. Feeling fresh, walking in crisp air through picturesque fields, hills and forests. The Camino Way is well - signed, you can find the symbol of the Camino - a scallop shell – everywhere to keep you on the track, as well as yellow arrows which help with navigation.

The Basque Country keeps its unique cultural tradition and identity in distinct language and music: Navarra, then La Rioja where the scenery of vineyards reminds you constantly that you are in the Rioja region famous for its excellent wine. At the summit of the hills, along with Pilgrim monuments, unfolds the scenery of endless sunflower fields and wind turbines. Then follows the flatness of the Palencia region which you just want to walk through as soon as possible, as, scenery-wise, this is the least interesting part of the Camino. The breakthrough happens again in Leon as you entering the Cacabelos in El Bierco province surrounded by mountains by all sides which makes this area isolated from neighbouring lands. Then you pass the town of Ponferrada, donated to the Templar for protecting the pilgrims on the Way of St James with a Templar Castle built in the 12th century. Finally, Galicia - the most scenic and picturesque part of Camino full of historical towns and the Atlantic coast. I have mentioned just a few places in this historical land of Northern Spain, which is bursting with heritage.

The Camino for me was also a culinary adventure. I ate the best Pinchos, (commonly known as the tapas of Northern Spain) in Pamplona, the best Rioja I drank in Navarra. Galicia is famous for its seafood and Pulpo – octopus in Melide, (Case del Elzemieke).

What I never forget was the special connections and friendships which I made on this trip. Endless discussions about life, happiness, love, dreams, faith, religion. You are never alone on the Camino unless you want to be. Sometimes I needed silence and solitude, but most of the time I was in the company of others. It happened so naturally. You meet people in hostels, in the evening sharing dinner and a glass of wine and of course walking on the Way.

Life was simple on the Camino. Waking up very early in the morning, walking for about 6 hours, resting, eating and being so grateful for comfort of bed in the evening. Sometimes sleeping with 20 people in the room. Snoring stopped bothering me after the 2nd day, it is a part of the experience (however ear stoppers can help). The hardest part for me was to say goodbye to my friends and let them go at the end of each part of my Camino. Many of them walked further to Santiago but I chose my Way. I had stopped and started again from the point I finished the last time.

My epic journey took me 4 years to complete. Entering Santiago de Compostela was very emotional for me. All my friends who I carried in my heart from previous years walked with me in this moment. I tried to imagine how it was for them walking to Santiago town.

Did they find what they were looking for, did they have their answers, and did they think about me?

I made some close friends with  I am still in touch, and some acquaintances who I only encountered once, like a couple from New Zealand who I met at dinner in Zubiri. They were walking the Camino in reverse from Santiago as they had already done the Camino on bicycles.

The Camino walk is like life; sometimes with sunshine, sometimes with rainy days. It is not about the destination, it’s about the journey.
